What is an asymptomatic retinal detachment?

An asymptomatic detachment is one that is found to be present but which the patient is not aware of. Whilst it is impossible to age such detachments, it is likely that many have been present for years and perhaps in some cases a decade or more without progressing or causing a visual problem.
