How much pain will I have?

You can expect your eye to be uncomfortable or sore following retinal surgery. The pain in the eye should usually be relieved by drugs such as paracetamol, aspirin or neurofen. It is only rarely necessary to use stronger painkillers than this and the need for stronger painkillers suggests that something may be wrong.
