What causes a retinal detachment?

Retinal detachments are usually caused by a combination of bad luck and ageing. Cataract surgery slightly increases your risk of developing a retinal detachment as does myopia (shortsightedness) and very occasionally an injury. Some people are born with a genetic (hereditary or family) tendency to retinal detachment but this is on the whole rare.
