What is it like having gas in the eye?

Having a gas bubble in the eye is somewhat like having your eyes open under water. Patients with a gas bubble in the eye will be aware of a line which starts in the upper part of the vision of the treated eye and which slowly descends.

The vision above the line tends to be normal and the vision below the line very poor as one is looking through the gas bubble. When the line reaches the bottom of the eye it sometimes breaks up into two or three small drops and then disappears.

Depending on the type of gas which is used, this takes either 2-3 weeks or 6-8 weeks to occur. Until such time as the gas bubble has gone it is not safe for you to fly. An oil bubble in the eye tends to allow slightly clearer vision than this but it is still very blurred.

You should not drive with a gas bubble in your eye !
